Women's Leadership Team
Working for South Dakota’s #1 Industry
Our Mission
To promote and assist South Dakota Farm Bureau by involving women through helping them develop their leadership skills. Educating the public about safety as well as agriculture and consumer issues is the main focus of our efforts.
Safety
Educating kids and adults about safety hazards is crucial to saving lives. In South Dakota there were 54 deaths due to ATV’s from 1982-2007. Over 22% of those deaths were children under the age of 16. Safety in and around grain bins and grain handling equipment is another area that we must increase our efforts. According to the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, since 1966 more than 5 deaths per year have occurred due to grain suffocation nationwide. South Dakota has not been spared in these statistics. The percentage of children under 16 killed in grain bins and grain handling equipment is almost the same as the ATV statistics. Distributing the safety sticker shown here has been one of our projects for this year. It is available by contacting

Conferences
SD Farm Bureau Women help sponsor and support two conferences during the year. The “Women in Blue Jeans” (WIBJ) conference is held in January in Mitchell, SD and the “Women in Ag” conference is held in September in Spearfish, SD. Both conferences are unique, educational, and offer a place to meet new friends and old acquaintances. The conferences also provide a meeting place for sharing similar interests and concerns with women who are in agriculture.

Providing accurate agricultural information to consumers and students is one of our missions. Each year we choose several books that we encourage county Farm Bureaus to purchase and give to schools and libraries in their area.
We host an activity and informational booth at the
Washington Pavilion Ag Day. This outreach to school children and adults has been very successful in providing information about agriculture.
Our Farmers Care shopping bag has been purchased and distributed statewide by counties and individuals who have given the bags to consumers at farm shows, Food Checkout Week activities, and through other agricultural promotions.
Priority Issues
The SDFB State Board chooses the issues that are priority each year. The Women’s Team is a part of the effort that works on those issues on the local, state and national levels.
